7 Fashion Essentials Every Woman Should Own

Many women get so wrapped up in trends and styles that they forget the basics. But it’s these timeless classics that transcend years and outlive the fads that are here one season, gone the next. So before stocking your closet with bold neons, safari-style tribal prints, and busy floral patterns, take a step back from your closet and make sure you have these seven basics.

1.       The LBD (Little Black Dress) – You can get a lot of mileage out of a little black dress, so it’s good to splurge on this staple. Because you’ll wear it so much, the cost per wear will be incredibly low. For example, say you buy a $90 LBD and wear it five times a year for three years. That calculates to a $6 cost per wear – sure beats buying a new dress for every occasion! When shopping for a perfect LBD, think classic silhouettes like A-line and shift. Stay away from trendy details like sequins, and this dress will last you years.

2.      discount-handbags A white oxford – A white oxford button down shirt goes with any outfit. Wear it with dress pants for business casual, or wear it with jeans for a country club look. You can even wear an oxford over a sundress for warmth that looks like it was stolen from your boyfriend’s closet. Once you get a white oxford, expand your collection to include hues like chambray, navy, pink, and even pinstripes.

3.       Staple shades – When it comes to sunglasses, the same rules apply. Don’t fall for trendy styles until you have the basics. For women, aviator sunglasses> and cat eye sunglasses continue to be timeless, popular styles. When shopping for essential sunglasses, remember to choose a pair that blocks both UVA and UVB rays!

4.       Black pumps – I’m not a huge fan of spending too much money on shoes. As long as they’re comfortable and get me where I need to be, I’m not too fussy. However, if there’s one shoe to invest in, it’s a great pair of black leather pumps. You can wear these with everything from your LBD to jeans. If you care for them properly and get them repaired when needed, you can wear a nice pair of pumps for years.

5.       A great bag – A nice handbag is an investment for any woman. When I think of a really nice, staple bag, my first thought is a Chanel. When purchasing a staple bag, think of styles that go with almost any outfit. Black or neutral-hued bags are often best, and stay away from too much embellishment. A really nice bag never goes out of style, and if you make the investment, you have a piece that can be passed on as a family heirloom.

6.       A pencil skirt – Pencil skirts are incredibly flattering on women of all shapes and sizes. A great pencil skirt should hug your hips and thighs (not too tightly) and land right around your knees. Start with a skirt in black, but if you find you wear it often, expand your collection to include navy , brown, and even white.

7.       Great jeans – Great jeans are hard to find. The brand your girlfriend swears by might not fit your figure as well as it does hers. So what’s the key to finding that staple pair of jeans? Trying them on! Try all different cuts, styles, and brands. Even if you don’t think you’ll like them, try them on. I cannot stress this enough. One brand’s boot cut might not fit you right, but another brand’s version of this same style might fit you like a glove!

These are the seven basics I think every woman should have in her closet. What would you add to this list?
