Fashion Trends in Japan

Japan has long been considered the fashion trend setting capital of the world and the fashions that show up in our high street stores have often been seen in Japan one or two years before. Image is everything in Japan and young girls in particular will do anything to keep up with the latest trends, wear the latest clothes and own all the must have fashion accessories.

Tokyo is Japan’s fashion capital and in areas like Harajuku, young men and women will frequently walk around or just hang out in their coolest clothing, hoping to be spotted by a street style photographer. These photographers take pictures of anyone with a trendy look to be published in magazines and there are also head hunters out looking for the next Japanese model.

Most Japanese girls will own a full wardrobe of different outfits, a makeup collection fit for any self respecting makeup artist and a wide selection of accessories. Trends like false nails and colored contact lenses are also popular so don’t be surprised if you see lots of Japanese walking around with bright blue or green eyes – they’ll just be using green contact lenses.

Shopping is practically a national obsession in Japan which starts at a young age. If you head to the popular shopping areas of Tokyo just after school finishing time, you are likely to be surrounded by hoards of young Japanese girls out shopping for the latest fashions and ‘kawaii’ or cute items with their friends. If a new version of something comes out in Japan then everyone must have it – it’s no go sticking with your original version which is now considered obsolete.

Fashion is everywhere in Japan and you can get a little taste of it by picking up a couple of Japanese fashion magazines which are available in international bookstores and on EBay. Be prepared for serious shopping envy!
