Discount Tapestry Handbags

Tapestry handbags are unique and quite beautiful with a nice vintage flair. A tapestry handbag made from the Aubusson region during the 1800's usually had a story to tell. These stories were portrayed in the beautiful figures and subjects in the tapestry. The tapestry handbag from this period usually depicted ladies and gentlemen in romantic poses with numerous flowers, birds and other romantic figures integrated into the tapestry. The rich French ambiance was usually portrayed in the Aubusson tapestry handbags during this century. Not only is the tapestry itself lavish but also the metal purse frames were embellished with semi precious stones and other decorations that just take one's breath away. The tapestry handbag was then a sign of the status of the lady carrying it. The more lavish the tapestry handbag means the wealthier and more influential her family was. Some metal frames are gilded and have cherubs or pearls all over the frame.

Due to progress, hand weaving has since been taken over by machine weaving. The vintage Aubusson tapestry handbags are still found up to this day and age but their prices can be anywhere around a few hundred dollars to several thousands depending on the condition and the circa. There are still some artisans in the Aubusson region that make the renowned hand bags from tapestry but expect these to be expensive than the ones mass produced.

The Background of the Tapestry Handbag

Men were actually the very first to carry bags around not women. The women soon followed suit due to the many accessories that they needed to carry to maintain their beauty and poise. The tapestry handbag came to light around the start of the 1800's. The art of weaving a tapestry handbag is first thought to have originated in the Aubusson region of France. This area was initially well known for creating life-sized and lifelike tapestries that was the rage at that time. Many of France's wealthy families contracted weavers to make pieces to hang in their homes while others had tapestry handbags made for the ladies of the household.

The painstaking process of weaving a tapestry could reach up to a year depending on the intricacy and size of the project. A tapestry handbag did not take as long as that to make. The most luxurious kinds of tapestry handbags ever created are the ones from the French Aubusson region made from dyed wool threads and silk threads. The colors were rich and deep and the fullness of the weaving was compact and thick.

About The Uses Of Tapestry In History

Usually large sizes looms have been used to weave tapestries on. Various types of threads have been used to make laces like gold, silk and silver threads weaving various pictures of subjects including those of the peasant scenes after Teniers, Biblical history, mythology, etc.

Tapestries have been used as wall hangings but unlike needlework, it was woven on a loom. It was also made in proportions much larger than would normally be used in hand-stitched embroidery; tapestry panels ranging from ten or twelve feet in height and twenty feet long are quite common. The primary medium was wool, but in special cases silk was also used. In some of the finest works the use of gold and silver can be seen.

The main center of tapestry weaving from the year 1500 has been Brussels. But the outputs throughout the years have greatly varied in quality. Biblical and Roman history, peasant, mythology and scenes after Teniers were some of the subjects.

Most seventeenth-and eighteenth-century works are let down by the fact that over the years a murky brownish image has faded their red dyes. Brussels tapestries usually have a mark with a shield with the letter ‘B’ on either side. At times weavers add their names or initials, in the work. There were two important factories in France.

Both the Gobelins and Beauvais were founded in the second half of the seventeenth century. While the former was a private concern with State support, the latter was a Royal factory and it was only in the late eighteenth century when one could buy any of its productions. Though both did work of the highest quality, Beauvais was mainly known for a series of panels based on the Fables of La Fontaine, and for many sets of settee covers and chairs.

The former was also made at Gobelins, where around 1775 they made beautiful and exemplary sets of furniture covers and matching wall hangings. Example of such decorative harmony is to be seen in a room designed by Robert Adam, remains at Osterley Park, near London. A set of furniture (shorn of its wall-hangings but even now intact Gobelins covers) made for Moor Park in Hertfordshire, is housed in the Museum of Art in Philadelphia. Some of these rich ensembles are intact even now, but a collection of tapestries that had been made for a store at Croome Park in Warwickshire has been sold off for a sum of £50,000, and is now seen in the New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Again in France at Aubusson, tapestry panels, chair covers and also tapestry carpets were manufactured. Most of the output belongs to the nineteenth century, although the pattern of work is similar to an earlier era.

Philip and Michael Wauters, supplying to foreign markets, they wove their tapestry in Antwerp. Works popularized by other plants were copied here with success, these Flemish tapestries were also at times confused with the English productions they copied. Brussels was the center head of tapestry weaving.
